NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police charged a female Gallatin High School teacher with having sex with a male student at her Nashville home.
Holly Hatcher was charged with six counts of statutory rape by an authority figure.
The 25-year-old history teacher and volleyball and softball coach admitted to having an ongoing relationship with the student.
Court documents indicate that Hatcher, who lives in the Donelson area, and the teenager had sex in Gallatin and in Nashville. Police said the pair had sex on six occasions.
Police began investigating her after receiving information from Gallatin police.
On Thursday, Hatcher was released from the Sumner County Jail after posting a $15,000 bond for three counts of statutory rape. Her bond in Nashville was set at $6,000.
"The Sumner County School District will not tolerate this type of behavior that is alleged in this incident from any of its employees," said Steve Doremus, Sumner County Schools spokesman.
In the wake of recent allegations of teacher misconduct nationwide, the school district now offers a 45-minute in-service devoted entirely to student-teacher relationships. Hatcher attended the session.
"At the end of the day, incidents like this occur because of bad decisions made by individuals," Doremus said. "When one of our employees makes a bad decision, it violates the trust placed in us by parents in this community. It hurts us, not only as a school district, but hurts each of us as individuals."
Detectives said Hatcher and the student met at school. She allegedly had sexual contact with him at a Gallatin boat ramp; while driving through Sumner County and at her home.
Hatcher is out on bond. Police said the student returned to school.
Hatcher once taught social studies at Mt Juliet High School. Wilson County officials said there were no complaints and no disciplinary problems in her file.
Sumner County school officials said she passed all background checks there as well.
Doremus said Hatcher submitted her resignation Thursday.
In related news, another Gallatin High School teacher was arrested.
Police said physical education teacher Roy Jackson assaulted a student at school on Monday. Jackson now faces an assault charge.
