Florida- Presidential hopeful Senator John McCain’s campaign team in Florida is under arrest for allegedly soliciting sex from an undercover officer.
Six months ago, Presidential contender McCain, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, was regarded as the front-runner for his party’s nomination.
But things have taken a turn since that time. And just last week alone, startling resignations have immerged, and an arrest of a member of his leadership team occurred last Wednesday.
Florida Rep. Robert “Bob” Allen, 48, is married with a teenage daughter.
He chairs the House Committee on Energy and was chosen as one of six elected officials to chair McCain’s Florida Legislative Leadership Team.
Allen was arrested and handcuffed and is now facing one count of solicitation for prostitution.
Allen held a press conference last Thursday disputing allegations that he approached an undercover officer in a Florida park bathroom. The allegations include his agreeing to pay the officer $20 to perform oral sex.
With this arrest, it’s been a rough week for McCain’s political family.
On Tuesday of last week, McCain’s political guru, John Weaver, a veteran of McCain’s 2000 campaign, resigned along with Terry Nelson, his campaign manager.
Deputy Campaign Manager Reed Galen and Political Director Rob Jesmer followed suit, as did several lower-level aides.
McCain’s staff that once numbered about 120 members is now down to about 50.
And if these charges prove true, the campaign could be short one more member.
As for the impact on McCain, supporters insist the campaign will proceed forward because they say the campaign is about the McCain, not the staff.
