from www.seattletimes.nwsource.com – Taryn Fairbanks, a former Garfield High School teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.
The charge carries a sentencing range of six to 12 months in jail, according to the King County Prosecutor’s Office. Fairbanks, 33, was booked into the King County Jail on Thursday pending her sentencing.
Fairbanks, who was previously known as Taryn Stermer, resigned from Seattle Public Schools shortly before the charges were filed in July. She then moved back to her native Las Vegas.
According to Seattle police, Fairbanks had sex with a 17-year-old Garfield student on June 23 during a party at his home. His parents were out of town at the time, police said.
When detectives interviewed Fairbanks about the incident, she said that she stopped by the boy’s home to drop off some T-shirts and supplies for a school-newspaper retreat, police said in court charging documents.
While the age of consent for a sexual relationship in Washington state is 16, it is against the law for a teacher or anyone else in a position of power to have sexual relations with anyone under the age of 18.
Fairbanks taught language arts and advised the school newspaper, The Messenger, according to a spokeswoman for Seattle Public Schools. Previously, she taught in the Kent and Renton school districts.
Fairbanks is scheduled to be sentenced on April 8.
