Porn Valley- Although his former contract girl Mary Carey's no longer farting on national TV shows and is now pooping on her boyfriend's shoes while in the employ of another porn company, that isn't stopping Kick Ass Pictures' Mark Kulkis from getting his share of the ink. Kulkis, a graduate of the University of Michigan, who made Carey a household name during the last California gubernatorial race and then again last year during a celebrated Republican fund raiser www.adultfyi.com/read.aspx?ID=10238 , was recently interviewed for the Los Angeles Daily Journal by Robert D. Richards and Clay Calvert. In the article Klukis is referred to as "A Media Maestro."
Kulkis is also singled out in the article as "perhaps the most prominent and increasingly important face of a new generation of adult entrepreneurs," one whose blazing trails in the industry with high profile promotional tactics and is moving adult fare squarely into the mainstream of modern American culture.
Before coming into the adult business, Kulkis also attended law school for a semester at the University of Fordham and worked actively in the public relations field for a half decade in New York.
"The industry is becoming more accepted partly because of the Internet," states Kulkis who was also a former managing editor of AVN before going over to Hustler where he helped launch Hustler Video. In a discussion about the mainstreamization of porn, Kulkis seems to think that it's part of a long term evolutionary process and that becoming a porn star is a legitimate career choice nowadays.
Kulkis also addresses several other topics in the article including the First Amendment and the Rob Black case.
"The First Amendment doesn't mean anything unless it protects the free speech you hate," Kulkis says. "If it's only going to protect polite speech, it really does no good. The founding fathers wanted offensive speech protected." Kulkis goes on to say that Free Speech is the only way you can root out corruption.
"If you have a very powerful person that is doing something wrong, the only way to bring him down is through public opinion." At the same time, however, Kulkis doesn't think any political party would seek out an affiliation with the adult entertainment industry.
"It's a no-win situation for them."
Describing himself as socially liberal and financially conservative, Kulkis is basically against government in all areas of life.
On the issue of Black, Kulkis feels that if Rob Black ends up winning his case, the results will obviously benefit the industry. But, at the same time, Kulkis sees Black, who basically egged the government on, as a two-edged sword.
"He's a lightning rod for a government crusade against porn," feels Kulkis who believes that Black has a right to distribute his product even though it's personally not Kulkis' cup of tea.
