When brothel owner, Dennis Hof, attended a Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce meeting earlier this year, he learned by chance that the musicians were the only school band in the 2008 Nevada Day Parade without uniforms.
Hof brought the idea to raise funds for the band back to the employees at the brothel and the rest is history.
“The girls raise money for all kinds of charities,” Hof said, adding, “If the old cathouse can do it, so can every business in this area.”
He parlayed that into an official challenge for every business in west-central Lyon County.
“I challenge the rest of the business community to raise the rest of the money needed for the uniforms during June — and I want to hear how they are doing,” Hof said.
“The girls have been excited and worked very hard to take the money they raised over the top,” he said. “They encouraged every customer to drop money in a clear plastic box by the front door. They even had their photos taken with many people in exchange for donations.”
The band’s boosters have been actively raising money to meet the hefty price tag of about $40,000. They recently held a barbecue –the Kiwanis of Dayton Township did the cooking and the school’s bands provided entertainment.
The band performed at the recent Oodles of Noodles festival in Dayton and raised funds during the daylong event. The chamber took on the project as a priority to help boost the amount of money earned.
Now, with Hof’s challenge the band members might be able to reach their goal.
