On the Set: Visit to Supergirl

From www.bleedingcool.com – Unless you’re stranded on a deserted island ala Oliver Queen, you’ve heard of the new trend of Superhero based porno parodies.

The heroes of our youth poured into the fantasies we never spoke of out loud. But take a moment and type in “Supergirl Naked” into a search engine and you end up with thousands of images ranging from artistic drawings of the character nude to cos-players in and out of skimpy costumes to Photo-shopped pieces of porn-stars made to look like the hero… and there’s a picture of Steve Erwin. No idea about that last one.

The bottom line is ever since Wonder Woman pulled up her bodice, Batgirl squeezed into her tights and Supergirl slid on her red mini-skirt there have been fans wanting to see them out of costume as well.

Earlier this week I was afforded the opportunity to visit the set of the latest feature, Supergirl a Porn Parody, and get a glimpse behind the curtain of this quickly growing area of the adult entertainment industry.

I’d like to say I got this opportunity because I am uniquely qualified by being both a comic book writer and a glamour/nude photographer… but the truth is I got this opportunity because I live in Los Angeles and could get to the set. While driving out there, I was trying to decide how I was going to approach this article.

I could make it a simple fluff piece, show images of the sexy women, talk about how hot the sex scenes are, say a few nice words about the crew then tap out claiming a job well done. I could also do an expose story showing how the adult industry is taking advantage of the comic industry’s current popularity just to make a buck. Or I could just do a detailed account of watching seven women and two guys have sex… The thing is, if you go in to any situation looking for something specific, you are bound to find it whether it’s really there or not. So I decided just to go to the set and have an experience.

I arrived at a nice and somewhat secluded home in Woodland Hills as the crew was dealing with some difficulties. This was the back-up location as they were forced to move from the original set due to permit issues. The grip truck with all the lighting equipment could not get up the rather steep and curved driveway, so they were bringing up the rigging in smaller vehicles a bit at a time. I met with Dan the production manager who showed me around a bit, pointed out who was who and then let me loose in the house.

The first person I wanted to talk to was of course Supergirl. The role of Kara was given to Alanah Rae [pictured], a veteran of the industry having worked in close to two hundred movies in her three year career. I said given because it was, she didn’t have to audition, one look at the 5’7” New Jersey native and it’s obvious she has the physical attributes to play the title role.

I sat with Alanah in the backyard on the edge of a cement water fountain and asked her about her familiarity with Supergirl and comics in general. She told me how her father would buy comics for herself and her brothers and that there was always a copy of Superman and a few of Supergirl around the house.

When she got the role, Alanah watched the Helen Slater movie from 1984 for inspiration. She sees the character as a fish-out-of-water trying to fit in to her new planet and its customs. She knows right from wrong in the overall sense, but now she is in a world of gray areas. If all goes according to plan this will not be the only time Alanah will be in the blue and red and a quick glance at the script gives us a hint at where the next appearance might be.

The scene they were shooting that day involved a sorority that Supergirl in her civilian disguise of Laura Lee was pledging… along with her college roommate, Barbara Gordon.

Having heard the name of another well known comic character, I decided to track down the beautiful young lady from Georgia who got the role, Sunny Lane. I found her relaxing on a couch as the lighting was finally being put into place. She had been up until five am the night before filming and was on set at eleven am that day… though she should have been exhausted; her excitement at playing the character was obvious.

Sunny is a natural red-head who has been blond for the last few years, so donning the red wig for the character was a chance for her to go back to her roots… so to speak. Summer has wanted to play a superhero for a long time and can’t say that she will actually get to wear the Batgirl suit… but she did say she was ready for some “Bat-fuckingtastic Action” and told fans to watch until the end of the movie. She sees Barbara as someone who grew up the daughter of a cop, so she has been good but has an excited curiosity about being out on her own for the first time; a bit of the innocent instigator. She also assured me that in this movie, Barbara is more than just an extra or a name drop.

Now what would a superhero movie be without a villain? And what would a Super____ movie be, even a porn parody, without a Luthor? We don’t need to find out as Andy San Dimas was cast in the role of Natasha Luthor, Lex’s niece. I did not get the opportunity to sit down with Andy while I was there, but I did get to see her work a dialogue scene in character and she is definitely bringing the villainy.

As the shooting began and I watched Alanah in her brown Laura Lee wig stand in line with Sunny and five other women being berated by Andy… I noticed a gentleman wander onto the set and make his way through the crew. What stood out to me the most was the Incredible Hulk t-shirt he was wearing.

I was told to find Jerry the producer when I got to the set but he wasn’t there. I was told by everyone that Jerry was the driving force behind the new Extreme Comixxx studio and their Superhero Porn Parody offerings. I guessed that this must have been Jerry… and I was correct. He came over, introduced himself and we went outside so we could talk.

First impression of Jerry: he loves comics and the characters he’s working with. He also loves the fans who buy his movies and wants to give them the best experience possible. He worries about all the details. When it comes time to pick a costume for a character, he doesn’t just go on-line and buy the latest “sexy Wonder Woman” offering for Halloween.

He either has the costume made or goes out to conventions and makes contact with cos-players in an attempt to purchase the best looking outfits available. He told me the Aquaman costume they used in the Justice League movie had won first prize at a convention just the year before. He’s even willing to cross media for the right look. If the best looking Green Arrow costume they can get is from the Smallville design then he’ll happily put that up there with a classic Black Canary costume.

Jerry showed me a few images from upcoming projects and where it wouldn’t be fair of me to say what they were… I can say that Extreme Comixxx doesn’t plan to just stick with DC characters and what they have in mind looks really good.

I was on set from three in the afternoon until midnight. I learned some very interesting things that I didn’t know about the adult industry. They take a lot of still shots prior to filming. A lot of the outfits used in the movies (costumes aside) are from the actor’s own wardrobe.

They film dialogue first and sex later. That a porn script is around 22 pages long (same as a comic script) and only writes up to and out of sex scenes, never scripting the actual sex. Also, features are shot between three and five days and never go over seven. This particular one was being filmed on what appeared to be a Canon 50D, the same camera I use for my photography. And I learned that the cast and crew work insanely long hours all to bring you a bit of adult entertainment.

But the single most important thing I learned on this particular set was about respect. Yes, they’re making a porno and all that goes along with it. The purpose of the script is to get the characters into sexual situations. And they could have simply tossed a woman into the blue and red costume, given her some stiff competition and yelled action. They didn’t.

They took the time to create a story that pays respect to the characters they are using and the fans of those characters. They took the time to try and make it Supergirl in a porno instead of just a costume on a sexy woman. And that is a hell of a lot more respect than we got from the folks that brought us the Halle Berry Catwoman movie.
