Las vegas- Newsweek never called it a "sprawling epic" as some adult websites claimed it did, but Digital Playground's Pirates did get a "blue movie of the ages" acknowledgement from the magazine and that was enough momentum to probably justify giving it the Best Video of the year award at Saturday night's AVN show.
And the Howard Stern show publicity certainly didn't hurt the chances of The Devil in Miss Jones from Vivid, either. The Paul Thomas-directed project got the Best Film accolade, and Thomas who was inducted into The Legends of Erotica the night before, was named Best Director-Film. Savannah Samson also won the Best Actress-Film award for her performance in the film while Jenna Jameson took it in the Best Supporting Actress - Film category.
The Devil in Miss Jones also took awards in the categories of Best Art Direction - Film; Best Cinematography [Ralph Parfait]; Best Editing - Film [Sonny Malone]; Best Screenplay - Film [Dean Nash & Raven Touchstone]; Best All-Girl Sex Scene - Film [Jenna Jameson & Savannah Samson]. Overall the picture won nine awards.
And, all together, Pirates won 11 awards including Best Director - Video which was won by Joone. Janine also took acclaim for Best Actress - Video. Meanwhile, The Best Actor - Video award went to Evan Stone. The Best All-Girl Sex Scene - Video was won by Janine & Jesse Jane. Pirates also won the Best High-Definition Production award; as well as awards for Best Special Effects; Best Music [Skin Muzik]; Best DVD; Best Supporting Actor - Video to Tommy Gunn and Best On-Line Marketing Campaign.
But did everyone flock to video stores to buy and rent Pirates? That question was answered by the fact that The Masseuse, probably inspired by Howard Stern's constant pandering of it, got the Top Renting Title of the Year; and 1 Night in China from Red Light District which features ex pro wrestler Joanie Laurer amazingly won the Top Selling Title of the Year.
In the performer categories, Manuel Ferrara was named Male Performer of the year while Audrey Hollander won Female Performer of the Year. Scott Nails, whose career started three years ago, was named Best Male newcomer and Club Jenna girl McKenzie Lee, in a stunning victory, was picked Best New Starlet. Steve Holmes was named Male Foreign Performer of the Year while Katsumi took Female Foreign Performer of the Year honors. Gia Darling was named Transsexual Performer of the Year.
Rounding out some of the other performer awards, Randy Spears owned the film categories by taking Best Actor for his work in Wicked Pictures' Eternity; and Best Supporting Actor in Red Light District Films' Dark Side.
Jonathan Morgan's Camp Cuddly Pines Powertool Massacre which won for Best Comedy and best Screenplay in the video category [Stormy Daniels, Jonathan Morgan & August Warwick] also saw Stormy Daniels win the Best Supporting Actress - Video award. Bill Margold's work in Dark Side for Red Light District Films earned him the Best Non-Sex Performance award.
