SAN DIEGO [NBC San Diego] -- Police shot and killed a man suspected of driving the getaway car in a pornography shop robbery early Wednesday, NBC reported.

Investigators said a gunman robbed the F Street Bookstore in the 2000 block of University Avenue at Florida Street just after midnight.

A police patrol car was driving on University Avenue as a man came out of the store. The patrol officers were unaware that a robbery had just taken place, but they saw the man remove what appeared to be a stocking mask from his head as he ran down the street, officials said. Thinking this suspicious, they made a U-turn, but they lost sight of the man when he turned the corner.

The officers spotted a green Chevrolet Cavalier pulling out when they turned onto Florida Street. They thought the man they were looking for might be in the car, so they followed it to Lincoln Avenue until it stopped at a dead end.

When the officers got out to question the driver, one of them saw a handgun on the driver's lap, investigators said. The man raised the gun and fired at least one shot, police said. Both officers returned fire, killing the man, according to investigators.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave during the shooting investigation, police said.

Police said they believe the dead man was the getaway driver in the porn shop robbery. Investigators determined that the robber yelled for the driver to leave when he saw the police car. He then ran through an apartment complex and dumped clothing, gloves and a handgun. Police recovered those items, but the man got away.
