Australia – from www.northcote-leader – PUBLIC fury over a pornographic film shot on a Rydges Bell City balcony has forced management to screen some of the hotel’s balconies with frosted glass.
The move comes after Leader’s February 15 report on neighbors’ outrage at discovering two women being filmed using sex toys and performing sex acts on an overhanging balcony.
Darebin city works and development director Michael Ballock said Rydges Bell City owners and management had agreed to frost glass on overhanging, transparent balconies.
Mr Ballock said the council met Bell City after issuing the center a compliance notice to stop using a rear laneway, shared by neighboring houses, for deliveries and pick-ups.
The council also ordered Bell City to close its southern car park entrance on Hotham St to limit traffic near residential properties. But the most notable action may be the easiest to implement.
“As part of the discussion we have had with the owners they have agreed to put some screening on those balconies, so rather than clear glass they will be frosted,” Mr Ballock said.
“(The meeting) was to reinforce, as we would with any other applicant, that if they didn’t comply (with the transport issues) the next step would be we would take enforcement action, which might mean the Magistrates Court or it might mean VCAT.”
Young St resident Michael James (pictured) said screening of the balconies was “a start”, but not a complete solution to indecent exposure problems.
“Those balconies need to be fully enclosed,” Mr James said.
“The (pornographic film) highlighted the dramas we have on a daily basis.”
Other complaints include a naked stripper entertaining men on a balcony, fireworks being set off, guests yelling abuse at children and beer bottles and used condoms being thrown from balconies.
Rydges Bell City general manager Matt Lawton said they weren’t operational issues and, as such, were matters for the center’s owners, Asian Pacific Property Investment, which could not be contacted.
