DENVER (CBS4) ― Sex, drugs and high rollers. A former prostitute said all three were in play during wild sex parties at an exclusive Denver social club.
“There was no trying to hide anything that was going on,” the woman, who worked for “Denver Players,” told Brian Maass, of the after hours parties she said took place at The Denver Club, 518 17th St., over the last several years. She spoke on the condition her name not be used.
“Basically there was a lot of drug use, drinking, almost orgy type stuff going on,” she said of the late night gatherings at the club.
Federal and local law enforcement authorities shut down Denver Players and a second escort company, Denver Sugar, last month. They executed search warrants and seized bank accounts, financial records and other evidence from several locations in Denver. Nobody has been arrested or charged, but a federal grand jury is investigating the prostitution services.
The call girl, who spoke exclusively to CBS4, said that on numerous occasions, women from the prostitution agencies were called to attend late-night parties at The Denver Club, a plush squash and social club located on the top two floors of a downtown skyscraper.
She said the women were paid around $2,000 to have sex with numerous men. Asked who the men were, she said they were “business guys, rich businessmen.” She said participants in the parties snorted cocaine and had sex throughout the club.
“People were having sex on the pool table, couches … in the locker room, in the steam room,” she said.
The President of The Denver Club, Peter Marayne, said, “The club would never sanction these kinds of parties, and that’s not what the club is for.” He said the parties “are a poor characterization of what the club stands for.” The Club’s Board of Directors said it had “no knowledge” of the parties and “has never sanctioned any such activities and certainly does not condone them.”
The club has been a pillar of Denver society and is one of the cities’ oldest social clubs. It was founded in 1881. While it has only about 100 current members, mostly interested in playing squash, they are highly placed in business, finance, law and the oil and gas industry. Mayor John Hickenlooper is a member and has been for years. A spokesperson said Hickenlooper plays squash at the club once or twice a week. Beer baron Peter Coors and billionaire Phil Anschutz are also members. None of them were at the parties in question.
For the men who were at the parties the woman described, it was no holds barred. “When people are standing around and there’s lots of participants and more than one girl and more than one guy involved in a sexual act and other people are watching, sounds like an orgy to me,” she said. “Some guys would watch, some guys would participate, always for a fee.”
She said at one late-night party at The Denver Club, some of the call girls discovered a robe belonging to Mayor Hickenlooper hanging in the club’s locker room. The name “Hick” is monogrammed on the robe. She said several of the girls wore the Mayor’s robe and “roamed around in it, thought it was cool to have the Mayor’s robe on.” Asked how she thought the Mayor would feel about that, she said, “He probably wants to get a new robe.”
A spokesperson for Hickenlooper, Sue Cobb, said the robe was a gift to the Mayor and while it may hang at the club, she said Hickenlooper never wears it. Cobb emphasized that Hickenlooper never attended any of the parties in question.
But the woman said downtown lawyers, money managers and businessmen were just part of the clientele. She said “doctors … general contractors … professional athletes” also patronized the prostitution service, which usually charged about $300 for an hour of sex. “Nuggets basketball players … Arizona Diamondbacks … Rockies baseball players” and some Denver Broncos were customers she said.
She positively identified several clients based on photos she was shown by CBS4. One is a well known Denver lawyer, another is a local money manager responsible for investing millions of dollars, and a third is well known in professional poker circles. CBS4 is not identifying the customers without the clients confirming the information or law enforcement releasing the names.
The names of about 30 of the prostitutes were contained in government affidavits released last month. At the same time, law enforcement did not release the names of any of the clients, even though sources say investigators obtained that information via search warrants. The prostitute who talked to CBS4 said there were thousands of customers.
“The women are targeted here,” said the prostitute, referring to the release of the women’s names, but not the men’s. “I don’t understand why they (the men) are being protected. If they’re going to know my name, they should know their names too. Legally, we’re being held accountable and they’re not, and they should be.” Asked why she thought the clients names were not being released she said, “Good old boys protect each other.”
Ultimately the woman said she does not see herself as a victim. “I think the spouses and wives and children and families are the real victims. I feel sorry for them.”
