Kansas- from www.kansascity.com – A serial child molester changed his plea in federal court Wednesday and was found guilty of sexually abusing 13 girls and creating videos of the assaults.

He allegedly had used sedative-laced ice cream and root beer to drug the victims at his south Kansas City home.

James Phillip Edwards, 61, entered 21 “no contest” pleas to counts charging production of child pornography, drugging his victims, advertising child porn on the Internet and possession and attempted distribution of child porn. In such pleas, a defendant admits that the government has the evidence to prove the crimes but does not admit committing them.

U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple accepted the pleas and found Edwards guilty of the crimes. Edwards faces minimum 15-year sentences on several child porn production charges and the single count of advertising it on the Internet.

Whipple said that no-contest pleas are unusual in his court, but he agreed to accept them to prevent putting Edwards’ victims through a lengthy public trial.

Authorities accused Edwards in 2009 of using the sedative-laced ice cream and root beer to drug young girls and pose them for pornographic pictures and videos. The incidents allegedly happened from 2001 to 2005.
