From www.dallasnews.com- Efforts to raise new funds for sexual assault prevention by taxing strip clubs have fallen apart in the final days of the legislative session.
Rep. Senfronia Thompson’s bill, supported by the adult entertainment industry, died in the Senate. It would’ve repealed an existing $5 per person state door charge, and taxed door fees charged by strip clubs at 10 percent.
Rep. Ellen Cohen’s bill, which would’ve reduced the state’s current $5 per person strip club fee to $3, is also dead.
That means the current version of the fee – which was approved in 2007 – will stay in place. But it’s been tangled in litigation for the last two years over constitutional questions. Without a legislative solution, it will be up to the courts to decide whether the fee stays in place.
