American, male pornstar living high in the Hollywood Hills… Sometimes I like to stand on my balcony and look out at my spectacular view of the greater L.A. expanse, from Downtown to a sweeping view of Beachwood Canyon. One day, in a contemplative moment, aided by a bit of THC, I noticed something fairly odd in the distance. At first I couldn’t quite make it out. As I squinted my eyes I was sure that I could almost see what looked like…could it be? Holy shit! From my window, I discovered that I had a perfect view of a beautiful, Disney-esque castle in the distance. “My agent hadn’t told me about this when I first moved in. I was ecstatic! After all, how many other people in Los Angeles can say they can see a fucking castle from their living room? I have to admit that it became quite a point of interest with me, I looked at it often and pointed it out to friends whenever I could. But I started wondering about it. What was the story behind this strange, tinseltown fortress? “At first I had mistakenly taken it for another “Magic Castle” here in Hollywood, one well-known for it’s magicians and dinner shows. I mean, wtf? How many fucking castles can there really be in the Hollywood Hills, know what I mean? BUT. After a little research (and getting my bearings) I discovered that it indeed was NOT said magician’s castle but something a bit more interesting… As luck would have it, I was flipping through one of my books on rock n’ roll stories when all was revealed… “Here is an excerpt about it from famed Andy Warhol factory member, former Velvet Underground, and Doors manager and close personal friend (how’s that for name-dropping, haha) Danny Fields, had to remember about said Castle in the Legs McNeil, Gillian McCain book, PLEASE KILL ME (which is a must-read for all ye punk rock afficianados).
“DANNY FIELDS: I was staying at the Castle with Edie Sedgewick (another famed actress/model and Andy Warhol factory member) and Nico (blonde bombshell, sultry singer of The Velvet Underground). The Castle was this two-story, owned by some Hollywood queen who rented it out to rock bands. Everyone had stayed there- Dylan, The Jefferson Airplane, The Velvets. The owner would rent it out to rock n roll bands because it was in such a state of ruin that it didn’t really matter what happened to it. “I never had any respect for Oliver Stone, but [especially didn’t] after seeing his version of the Morrison/Nico meeting in The Doors movie- “Hello, I am Nico, would you like to go to bed with me?” The reality of it couldn’t have been more different…
…I gave Morrison some acid and he got so horrendously drunk and stoned that he wanted to drive away. So I took his keys and I went to bed. There was no phone in the Castle. He couldn’t get outta there. While I was sleeping, David Numan who was also staying at the Castle, came running into my room and said, “You’d better check this out.”So I saw Nico out in the driveway sobbing, while Morrison was naked in the moonlight, climbing around the rooftop. He was jumping from one castle turret to the other.” Well, there you have it. Mystery solved. I love being able to see this castle now. In this Never Never Land of Los Angeles and particularly the adult film world, I have often felt as if I suddenly awoke in a California Dream of fancy and flight, a porno Peter Pan in a tragic kingdom, if you will, haha. After all, here in this limbo called Hollywood, time passes, but nobody has to admit it. Where is the proof? Here, the days topple one another like identical dominoes of temperature and climate so by the looks of things, it could be either Christmas or the Fourth of July. Here, amongst the palm trees and luxury cars, where nature’s palate never strays very far from dusty greens and sleepy yellows, Ponce De Leon’s fabled fountain of youth bubbles over with money, plastic surgery, and tenor. Learn to forget… As in the Red Hot Chili Pepper song, “Dream of Californication,” “It’s the edge of the world and all of Western civilization / The sun may rise in the East at least it’s settled it a final locations / And if you want these kinds of dreams / it’s Californication…” My rock n’ roll castle-in-the-distance fits in pefectly with all of this. In fact, I still look at it often, maybe even moreso now. Of course, now I can’t help but imagine MORRISON jumping “from turret to turret,” haha. By the way, the Castle, from what I can tell is far from dis-repair today. It’s clearly been fixed up over the years. In fact, I was told recently that the rock band, THE BLACK CROWES, now possibly own the home. Perhaps I can buy it from them someday…my own castle..with a Princess… Dream of Californication…
