PHOENIX - Strip clubs and adult book stores apparently don't fit in with Downtown Phoenix redevelopment plans.Officials say such shops and clubs clash with the image the city is trying to promote.
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says downtown's image is science, research and education with a mixed-use of businesses and residential.
Gordon says it doesn't include adult businesses that prey on university students or make mothers and fathers have to explain what nude dancing is to their child.
The city Planning Commission has approved, by a 7-to-2 vote, a measure that would essentially ban new strip clubs and other sexually oriented businesses from the downtown area.
Existing businesses can stay.
